Judy Boyt Original Badminton Trophy

BADMINTON HORSE TRIALS SILVER TROPHIES

In 2019 Judy Boyt was commissioned to create a new trophy after Mitsubishi retired from the sponsorship. So, 30 years after she made the old trophy she has created a new one to be used in perpetuity. It has been quite a challenge due to the limitations created by the pandemic, and the project had to be kept secret, but now, finally, the trophy can be revealed. Judy tells us about the process below:

“Several silver spoons and forks were donated by Badminton House and added to the melting pot at the foundry. The trophy base was made by Stevenson Brothers, famous makers of Rocking Horses, and I designed it so that a secret drawer is in that base. This secret drawer contains two plaques engraved with all the past winners’ names from 1949 to 2019. The future winners’ names will be seen on the outside of base.

The horses are similar to the original horse, but a bit smaller and all the tack, boots etc are all based on the present day saddlery and trends. Each stirrup, bit and martingale are all handmade. I have to give credit to the silversmith who I work with, Roger Squires, who worked his magic with all the tack.  All the texture on the horses was put on with hand tools and altogether there was over four months’ work on the silver alone.”
