“I created this page in order to illustrate how commissioning a piece of art is carried out.
My aim is for the client to be completely happy with their final sculpture. It’s therefore essential for us all to have as much involvement as possible at every stage of the design. I like to share all plans in detail and would be very happy to discuss and outline any commission.”

The Bull: ‘The Black Prince’
“We are delighted with the superb Aberdeen Angus Bull – known as the Black Prince – that Judy created for us at Sanderson Arcade in Morpeth. She has such a passion for her work and the research and attention to detail that goes into producing a piece is just fantastic. Sanderson Arcade was opened in November 2009 by Joanna Lumley OBE who chose the name for the sculpture in honour of one of her ancestors who bred the very first Aberdeen Angus Bull. The Black Prince is placed on a specially made canopy and he overlooks the Arcade rather majestically. It is always lovely to see and hear people stopping and commenting on the sculpture.”

How I created the Bull, ‘The Black Prince’ for the Dransfield Properties Ltd commission, situated in Morpeth.
- Take a real Bull.
- Take time to observe all the Bull’s moods, characters and conformation.
- Make drawings to capture the best characteristics.
- Visit the Bull’s chosen site, work from the architects plans and liaise extensively with the client in the hope of creating the piece they had envisaged.
- Make a ‘Maquette’, (a small 3D working sketch in wax).
- Draw detailed scale plans.
- Work closely with the architects, structural engineers and the fabricator to work out loading weights, pressures and fixing points of the Bull to comply with structural specifications of the building/site.
- Make large scale armature (internal skeleton).
- Add clay.
- Add personality and story.
- Final approval of clay sculpture by the client.
- Foundry work – making moulds, working waxes, casting in bronze, assemble, weld and finish.
- Deliver and install to site.
