Drawings Laser Cut in Metal
The original idea for these sculptures was to stand alone marking public paths and old railway lines in Jersey. Commissioned by private clients building a new house at Logie Point, overlooking the sea, one of the planning conditions was to commission a work of art.
The concept was taken from the public who use the old railway track and paths, the pedestrians, cyclists and dogs, and creating waymarkers. The girl standing on a fence, image taken from existing old station fencing, is trying to catch a butterfly, scaring off the seagulls who had been perched on the signpost. The other image I saw elsewhere on the island, people sitting and looking at the view. Bearing this in mind, I decided to have the girl sitting on the bench having cycled to that point – and the dog came too!
These images were taken from my drawings of the same subject matters and laser cut in corten steel, which has a natural rust patina, ideal durability for the salty sea air.
In 2019 the new building was awarded first place in the Jersey Design Awards for the best architecture, while the sculptures were Highly Commended for the Best Artwork in the Public Domain, noted for the design and humorous theme.
Pictured below is another of my laser cut sculptures. A cheeky chap making a sneaky getaway!
